Gürol Irzık
received
his BA degree in Electrical Engineering and his MA degree in Mathematics, both
at Bogazici University, Istanbul. He then switched to Philosophy of Science and
received his PhD from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at
Indiana University, Bloomington. His dissertation was on causal modelling. In
this dissertation and other publications, he urged philosophers of science to
pay attention to the causal modelling techniques employed in the social
sciences. He argued that although these techniques do not enable us to reduce
causes to correlational complexes, they provide powerful tools for linking the
two. He is very happy that causal modeling today has become a major area of
research in philosophy of science.
He also wrote on Carnap's and Kuhn's philosophies of science from a comparative
perspective, claiming that they should be seen as close allies rather than arch
enemies. His more recent research interests include science education,
social-political philosophy and politics of science.
